MAKE WE JOY
Commenting upon the deep emotional power inherent in music, someone once made the astute remark that "we sing when we can no longer speak". Indeed, the sung word seems able to communicate on a far deeper level than mere speech. It is our hope that the beauty of the music and poetry on this album, as well as its variety of repertoire, will help each of you rediscover and celebrate the Christmas season in a new and profound way.
It is a special privilege for us to present to you "A Christmas
Trilogy" by up and coming Canadian composer Robin John King. This
set was commissioned by Da Camera Singers especially for this album. In
these works, Robin employs a wide palette of colours and styles to bring
to life the wonderful medieval texts he has chosen. From the playful avant
garde flavour of "Make we Joy!" to the contemplative chant-like
"There is no Rose", Mr. King shows that he has a complete understanding
of the choral idiom. We anticipate that these pieces will become new Canadian
Christmas classics. Robin's works are complemented by choral masterpieces
of the Spanish Renaissance, the French Baroque, as well as many wonderful
arrangements of seasonal favourites.
On behalf of Da Camera Singers, I wish you a most joyous and peaceful
Christmas, feeling honoured that our music will be a part of this great
season's traditions in your home - Laurier Fagnan
(former artistic director - 1998-2005)
